Diabetic peripheral neuropathy can cause pain, numbness, stocking-like sensation, cotton stepping feeling, ant walking sensation and other abnormal sensations in the patient’s feet. People with type 2 diabetes are screened for peripheral neuropathy at least once a year.
Clinical diagnosis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DSPN) is based on:
Neuropathy symptoms (distal, symmetrical symptoms, excluding other medical history that warrants differential diagnosis).
Signs (ankle reflexes, pressure, vibration, tingling, temperature).
The toolkit contains 5 tests, 2 of which are abnormal to clinically diagnose diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
1、10g nylon wire – pressure sensoryration
2、Cool temperature checker – temperature sense check
3、40g pins – pain test
4、128Hz vibrating tuning fork – vibration perception check
5、Percussion hammer-ankle reflex examination
The cold and warm sensation Checker (Tip-Therm) test was used to assess the temperature disturbance of diabetic foot.
